She described expressing Soyeon’s emotions through the timing of standing up or reaching out rather than broad facial changes. During shooting she discussed these choices with director Keinosuke Hara and Aimi Satsukawa, who plays Yuki. Even a brief smile in their shared scene was carefully considered as a sign of intimacy from a usually reserved character.

Sharing the film with audiences

At the opening-day greeting at Shinjuku Wald 9 on July 2, 2016, Jiyoung joined a 14-person cast lineup in yukata. Her men’s yukata echoed her role in Kataomoi Spiral. Park Ha-yun in Punch-Drunk Woman

In season one of Nippon TV’s Punch-Drunk Woman, she played Park Ha-yun, an unconvicted detainee at Hikawa Detention Centre. The Ryoko Shinohara-led drama is set in a detention facility; the official profile describes Ha-yun as maintaining order in the women’s unit.

Charged with attempted murder, Ha-yun acts as a leader among the women detainees. Unit chief Kozue (Ryoko Shinohara) respects her, while Minami Haneda (Ichika Osaki) sees her as a rival. Her role establishes part of the power dynamics between detainees and staff.

She approached Ha-yun’s leadership as a presence that brings people together. Imagining the loss of a life built in Japan and the loneliness of having nowhere to belong, she sought to suggest that history in silent moments, holding strength and private pain within one character.

She treated bursts of Korean as moments when suppressed feelings overflow. The realistic detention-centre set also gave her a sense of confinement while filming cafeteria scenes.
