Nicole and Jiyoung left KARA, marking a turning point in the group's lineup. The group continued with a new member, and in 2022 both Nicole and Jiyoung would return for its reunion. It was a year of significant change in their long history.

Nicole’s KARA activities ended for the time being when her DSP Media contract expired on 16 January. The agency explained that Jiyoung also did not intend to renew her contract expiring in April, wishing to pursue study and acting. These were separate decisions tied to different contract dates, rather than a joint announcement that the group would disband.

The plan was already to continue KARA around Gyuri, Seungyeon and Hara. Youngji’s addition was confirmed in July, followed by four-member releases in August. Nicole and Jiyoung developed individual careers and returned in 2022 in a first-ever five-member lineup including Youngji. Their departures began a longer transition that eventually led to reunion.

The DVD and Blu-ray release of KARA 2nd JAPAN TOUR 2013 KARASIA preserved the November 24 Kobe World Memorial Hall finale. The limited DVD added backstage material from both Kobe dates, documenting the tour before Nicole and Jiyoung departed.

Three members on stage for KAMILIA DAY 2014

The meeting began at 7 p.m. at Blue Square Samsung Card Hall in Seoul. Gyuri, Seungyeon and Hara reunited with fans for their first group activity in about five months, sharing updates and thoughts about their future, presenting individual stages and performing STEP.

KAMILIA DAY with three members

This was the first official fan meeting by Gyuri, Seungyeon and Hara after Nicole and Jiyoung left. DSP announced the Seoul meeting on 24 May and the Nippon Budokan meeting on 1 June to mark three years since KAMILIA DAY was established in 2011. The Seoul event featured updates, activities for fans and individual stages.

Speaking directly to their fans

Reports after the event describe Gyuri asking fans to trust the three members and wait for them. Seungyeon spoke about continuing to work while recognizing the fans’ distress. Hara expressed her happiness at spending this time together and hoped fans understood their feelings. As the members struggled to speak through tears, fans called out encouragement and applauded.

Admission proceeds for youth support

The 9 May ticket announcement set admission at 5,000 won and stated that all admission proceeds would be donated to support young people from low-income households. Bookings ran from 9 to 16 May through the official ticket page and the We Generation donation platform. The announced duration was about 70 minutes.

Sojin, Siyoon, Youngji, Chaekyung, Somin, Chaewon and Yuji performed as BABY KARA, before Youngji was selected to join KARA.

Contemporary notices scheduled a 17:30 start on May 31 at the outdoor stage in front of Yamano Music, Tama Plaza Terrace. The contemporary h-kkd account lists three main songs followed by an encore of STEP.

Episode 4 of KARA PROJECT featured the performance on June 17. Reports published that day by etoday and JoongAng’s Japanese edition explicitly date the Japan performance to May 31. The reported audience of about 2,000 comes from production-side information relayed by the press.

Gyuri, Seungyeon and Hara held shows at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. at Nippon Budokan. Opening with Ima, Okuritai “Arigatou”, they shared updates, played games with fans and presented three solo stages. Three individual song choices

Seungyeon sang 혼자 사랑할까요 (Should I Love Alone), from her drama Her Lovely Heels. Hara performed HARA+’s 사랑의 마법 (Koi no Maryoku), and Gyuri sang Mika Nakashima’s Anata ga Iru Kara. The trio also performed STEP and Promise.

Near the end they announced an August single and a ten-show tour of seven Japanese cities, opening in Fukuoka on 24 October. Promise closed the main programme. Youngji is confirmed as a new member

Youngji was selected from BABY KARA during the live KARA PROJECT final on 1 July. In tears after her name was called, she thanked her family, staff, fellow trainees and supporters. Aged nineteen, she joined Gyuri, Seungyeon and Hara as the group moved forward with four members.

The announcement and the quartet’s next steps

The Japanese label announcement paired the new lineup with August releases in Korea and Japan, a Japanese single on 27 August and ten tour dates beginning in Fukuoka on 24 October. A 28-page photo book of the new quartet was planned for edition B, linking the selection directly to records and touring.

With Youngji joining the four-member lineup, KARA released the Japanese single “Mamma Mia!” It marked the beginning of the new lineup's releases in Japan and became a signature song of this period, also appearing on the next year's Girl's Story.

Explore the background, music and performances

The first Japanese single with Youngji centered on Mamma Mia! and So Good, with instrumentals of both. It brought songs from the Korean Day & Night project into the Japanese single format, extending the four-member lineup’s work across the two countries.

Edition A added a DVD with the main video, dance-shot version and filming footage. Initial copies also included a serial for the autumn tour’s advance ticket lottery, open from 26 August to 3 September, connecting the new recording with a chance to see the quartet live.

On September 6, 2014, Jiyoung returned to public view at Saitama Super Arena under her Japanese acting name, 知英. At the 19th Tokyo Girls Collection, announced by the organizer on August 21 as her first comeback stage, she welcomed the audience and spoke about beginning her path as an actor.

She appeared in the Reebok SPECIAL STAGE. ORICON’s same-day report described a navy-and-grey striped top, white miniskirt and sneakers. She walked to cheers and posed with Anna Tsuchiya at the front of the runway. K-PLAZA’s next-day report also recorded her walk and smiling greeting.

Beginning at Fukuoka Sunpalace, KARA toured across Japan. The four-member group, now including Youngji, performed for Japanese KAMILIA. From the membership announcement to CD releases and touring, the new lineup's activities continued to expand.

Explore the background, music and performances

The ten-show tour opened at Fukuoka Sunpalace on 24–25 October, continuing through Nagoya, Okayama, Ishikawa, Niigata, Osaka and Yokohama. It ended at Yokohama Arena on 19 November. Combining halls and arenas, the new quartet met KAMILIA around Japan about four months after Youngji’s selection.

The finale film opens with Mamma Mia!, Pandora and Lupin. Solos include Youngji’s Tenshi no Wink, Seungyeon’s Love The Way You Lie Part 2, Hara’s Minna Sora no Shita and Gyuri’s Hush Hush. New songs, older material and individual covers were preserved in the video released the following March.

Japanese edition of Day & Night released

KARA released the Japanese edition of the Korean release Day & Night. It contained six songs, including dublekick's “Mamma Mia” and “So Good.” With Japanese lyric translations included, it brought the new KARA's Korean-language music to listeners in Japan.

Explore the background, music and performances

The Japanese package brought the quartet’s Korean release with Japanese lyric translations. Dublekick produced Mamma Mia, presented as a funky dance number. Alongside it, Live, So Good, Melancholy (24/7), Red Light and Story formed a six-song portrait of the new lineup’s music.

The package included a 96-page photo book and one random card from four designs. Japan-only extras added eight photographs, two per member. Released during the Japanese tour, it complemented the August single by presenting the complete Korean track set and the quartet’s visuals.
